This snippet comes from around the middle of the book (page 306 of the paperback edition), when Cassandra (one of the main characters in a book full of "main characters") is just about to discover the forgotten garden of the title (no spoiler here – you know pretty much from the beginning that she'll go looking for it). As usual, I've found it impossible to limit myself to two lines – sorry, but I just couldn't decide where to cut.
She made her way along the hedge, trailing her fingers lightly over jagged ivy leaves. . . . Midway along she noticed a gap in the brambles, a small gap but enough to see that the light shone through, that there was something solid behind it. Careful not to be pricked by the thorns, Cassandra reached a hand in and leaned closer as the hedge devoured her arm, all the way to her shoulder. Her fingers scraped against something hard and cold. And you're just gonna have to read the book to find out what that cold, hard something is.

ReplyDeleteThat is fantastic! But did the hedge really "devour" her arm? Because I don't want to read about a horror garden. You never know -- it may be the latest "genre fiction." :)
