This week, BTT asks a very interesting question: Do you multi-task when you read? And I guess my answer would have to be: sometimes.
Even though I try to avoid it.
I'm really not great at multi-tasking in general, and I certainly prefer not to do it when it comes to my reading. I'm at my best and most contented when I can concentrate on one task at a time. And when I'm reading, I like to have absolute quiet and nothing to distract me. I just want to curl up with my book and let real life slip away for an hour or two.
But we're talking perfect world here, and of course none of us live in perfect world (or in theory, where everything works perfectly).
So, yeah, sometimes I have to do other things while I'm reading. Or accept that those around me are doing other things while I'm reading. But as long as I can keep reading while the "multi-tasking" is going on, I'm not bothered too much. It's just when the extra activity requires me to put down my book that I get upset. And I don't call that multi-tasking - I just call it being interrupted.
I can't do anything except listen to music when I am reading! I gotta turn to Audio books! Only way to keep up with reading!
ReplyDeleteHere is my BTT: Multi-Tasking post!
I agree, reading has the priority what doing several things at a time.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can relate to what you're saying...
ReplyDeleteHere's MY BTT POST
I have the luxury of reading at night before bed, so all I'm doing is reading. However, I do have a darling kitty who keeps me company and sometimes demands my attention while I read. But that's not really multi-tasking. ;)
ReplyDeleteMostly, I like a quiet place to read.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger I used to get really angry when I was interuped while reading. I am way more tolerent now.

New follower here....
ReplyDeleteAt first I didn't think that I multi-tasked when I read, but then when I really thought about it I guess I do. I eat and read. I also mute the commercials and read while watching TV. I drive to work and listen to a book too. So yes, I definitely multi-task and read.

Very good point about being "interrupted"!
ReplyDeleteHere's mine: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2011/03/booking-through-thursday-mutli-tasking.html
I like peace and quiet when I read, therefore, I have My Reading Corner, away from all the TV and noise.
ReplyDeleteI do multi-task when I crochet, I listen to an audio book then. However, I forgot that in my answer. Just never thought of it until I read it in someone elses answer.
I don't think true multitasking is possible: our brains only have so much attention to give, and dividing it only limits our ability to appreciate multiple things at once. Even when I'm multitasking with reading -- eating and reading, for instance -- I purpously switch between being fully attentive to one, or fully attentive to the other. (The exception is drinking, which I can do unthinkingly...though I do pause to appreciate the feel and taste of a good cup of hot coffee!)
ReplyDeleteI don't know how people can read while waiting in line at a store or at a red light, to me that would be more of a distraction and why bother? I need to really focus on what I am reading.
ReplyDeleteI need peace and quiet when I'm reading, but if I'm watching TV, I have to do something else too.
