Teaser Tuesdays: Wuthering Heights

This week my teaser lines come from one of my favorite books -- Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. I'm not actually reading it at the moment, although I've read it several times in the past. But I wanted a quote from a really romantic book for today, since this is my 99th wedding anniversary. OK, that's not completely true -- we haven't really been married for 99 years. But it's been a long, long time. When M and I walked down the aisle on that hot and humid August afternoon back in 19XX, many of you Dear Readers weren't even born yet. In fact, some of your parents were probably still toddlers. A frightening thought, but true.

Anyway, here's my teaser (from Chapter IX, about midway through) -- Catherine speaking about her feelings for Heathcliff:

My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff’s miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning: my great thought in living is himself. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it.... My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's Monday and I am not reading. I am packing. The hubs and I are getting ready to travel to Virginia for a couple of weeks, so today I am packing. And running errands. And obsessing about packing and running errands. Not doing much reading.

However, I have been doing some reading lately. June and July were much better reading months for me than May (when I read absolutely zero books). Recently I've finished:

• Artists in Crime by Ngaio Marsh
• Dead Man's Folly by Agatha Christie
• The Key by Patricia Wentworth
• Night Watch by Linda Fairstein
• Right Ho, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse
• Skios by Michael Frayn
• The Warden by Anthony Trollope

Haven't managed to get any reviews up yet, and that might have to wait until I get back from the trip. But I enjoyed every one of those.

So, back to getting ready for travel. And one of the things I need to do is decide what reading matter to take along. I've got the iPad loaded up with more Agatha Christie (just started Elephants Can Remember) and more Ngaio Marsh (next up: The Nursing Home Murder) and more P.G. Wodehouse, but the pad is a little heavy to read for several hours on the plane. So I need to decide which (real) book to take along.

I'm still just about three-quarters of the way through (and loving) Kate Morton's The House at Riverton, so if I don't finish that one up tonight, it'll be going along with me.


But if I do finish it, then I'll be looking for something else. Maybe I should just pick up something at the airport -- surprise myself with something completely new and different. Since I'm not a good traveler and really don't like to fly, whatever I take has to be something I can really get lost in, something that will divert my attention from helping the pilot fly the damn plane.
